Abstract

21,304. Winstanley, T., and Williams, F. H. Sept. 19. Ammonia.-Nitrogenous organic materials, such as wool waste, leather waste, peat, &c. are distilled in a retort, in an atmosphere of hydrogen with or without a small quantity of alkali, to obtain ammonia and charcoal. An electric current may be passed through the retort to facilitate the combination of the nitrogen evolved in the distillation with the hydrogen. The material is charged into a retort B set in a furnace A. The hydrogen is obtained by acting with steam on iron in tubes C, C<1> projecting into the retort. The gases pass away by a pipe E and are absorbed in water or ammoniacal gas liquor in a vessel F, or may be dried and treated with acid to form for instance ammonium sulphate; or they may be returned to the retort by valve G and pipe H. The Provisional Specification also states that the hydrogen-generating apparatus may be arranged outside the retort.
