Abstract

[Cognate Application, 14,675/12.] Braid; braiding-machines.-Torchon lace with improved Cluny spots is made on lace machines of the Barmen type by providing pairs of taper pins or points C, E leading from the spot-forming sections of the machine to the braiding-point F. The spots are made from, say, three warp threads A and threads from four braiding-bobbins S, and the later threads are passed round the pins C, E, which thus support the edges of the spot until the work arrives at the braiding point. The machine may be provided with centre-disks K, reversing- races D, G and switches grouped together as shown, in which case the pins C, E are mounted obliquely on pillars C', E<1> standing in the centre of the raceways D, G. If the pattern is so draughted that the braiding-threads are brought in and carried out again to points well away from the spots, the ends of the spots will be narrowed off so as to present the characteristic Cluny appearance. The work made on the spot-forming sections between the spots may be made of a more open character, presenting a greater contrast to the spot than would otherwise be the case, by the use of dummy spindles, which are distributed to other parts of the work during formation of the spots In making Cluny crosses, two pairs of points E, C, N, M, Fig. 6, are placed on adjacent sections to overlap as shown.
