Abstract

Variable-speed belt and chain gearing comprising only two chain, belt, or like gear trains yields four speed-ratios by operating clutches on two shafts only. A driving-shaft a carries two loose gears c, d adapted to be engaged alternatively by a double clutch g, Figs. 9 and 11, slidably connected to the shaft. A driven shaft b carries loose gears e, f and a sliding double clutch h. A ' cross-over ' shaft i carries two gears l, connected so as to turn together. One chain m, passes over the gears c, e, k and another chain n passes over the gears d, f, l. Two speeds are produced by moving the clutches g, h together in the one and in the other direction, and two other speeds are produced by moving these clutches in opposite directions. In the latter cases, both chains are in action. To move the clutches in the same direction, the lever y engages simultaneously their striking-forks w, x. To move the clutches in opposite directions, the lever y is slid to the right, disengaging the fork w and engaging the upper end of a pivoted lever z as well as the fork x. The lower end of the lever z remains in engagement with the fork w, effecting the reversed movement. The chains are tightened by eccentrics on the shaft i. Means for effecting reversed driving comprises an additional chain p, Fig. 3, an additional clutch gear q on the shaft a, and a pair of gears o, one of which engages one of the chains m, n. The invention is suitable for motorvehicles and for machine tools.
