Abstract

6035. Scott, M. H. March 16. Vapour burners.-Relates to steam generators for motor cars &c. and to vapour burners for heating them, and to pumps for supplying water to the generator, and air, oil, or other combustible to the burners. The generator has a number of helically-coiled tubes which form flues for the products of combustion from the burners b. The coils may be arranged vertically or curved. The steam may be superheated by a burner applied to the steam drum. A series of burners b, Fig. 7, the flame from the nozzles of which impinges on vaporizing - coils p, are connected to a supply pipe or a chamber v which steadies the flames. The valved branches s are connected to depending tubes t arranged over nozzles 7 on a tube w containing a ported spring- pressed, sliding, hollow valve x having a non-return inlet valve. The reservoir has a relief valve 12, Fig. 9, the compression of the spring being adjusted by a hollow screwed spindle 15 operated by a handle 17 carrying a spring lever 21 with a pin 19 to engage graduated holes in an index-plate 18. The plungers of the water, oil, and air pumps 29, 30, 31 are connected to a crosshead 25 carrying a cross-plate 28 engaging fixed and adjustable collars 33, 32 on the plungers. The collars are fixed in position by pins 35 engaging holes 34, and are adjusted to vary the strokes of the plungers. The pumps may be operated directly by the piston in a cylinder 23 or by mechanism from the main engine. This mechanism comprises a loose sprocketwheel 36 carrying a pivoted pawl engaging a ratchetwheel keyed on the shaft 27.
