Abstract
183,712. Indahl, M. C., and Dove, J. M. July 27, 1921. Balance gearing suitable for motor vehicles is provided with governing-mechanism mounted on the compensating pinions to limit the compensating action and prevent skidding. Shafts 6, 7, Fig. 1, are driven through side gears 19, 20 and compensating gears 21 carried by a casing 8. To the gears 21 are secured like planetary gears 25 which mesh with loose side gears 27, 28. The control of the pinions 21 is effected by rendering it impossible for the gears 27, 28 to turn backwards. This is done by friction detents, one of which is shown in Fig. 5. The gears 27, 28 are secured to sleeves 27<a>, 28a, each of which has a detent 29 for use in forward driving and another 30 for use in reversed driving. These are brought into action alternatively in pairs by oscillating a shaft 35, Fig. 5, having pinion teeth meshing with rack teeth upon plungers 31, 32 which serve to hold against rotation the outer rings 29b, 30b of the detents, rendering the detents operative. Each detent comprises rollers 29d spaced by a member 29<e> and set in inclined pockets 29<c> so as to jam in one direction. Alternatively, each sleeve may carry a single detent reversible as to its direction of gripping, such as is shown in Figs. 11 and 12. Rollers 40 are spaced by fingers 41a upon a ring 41 having a lug 42 between pockets 39<a> with double inclines for acting in one direction or the other according to how the ring is displaced relatively to the ring 41. The ring 39 is displaced in one direction or the other and held there by toggles 48, 49, a spring 50<a>, and a control spindle 52 having a crank projection 55. Specification 183,711 is referred to.
