Abstract
188,055. Mooney, D. J. July 29, 1921. Planes, construction of.-All-metal wings and control planes for aeroplanes have their thin sheet metal coverings attached to strips shaped to interlock with the framework in such a manner that the coverings can be slid into position. Ailerons and small wings have the coverings in one piece with shallow channels c, Fig. 1, curved over at the edges d, riveted or otherwise secured to the covering at the same pitch as the ribs so as to engage the booms e; but large wings have the covering in strips which may be overlapped and riveted to the channels. Fig. 10 shows a modification in which channels c on the covering-plates a engage channels e on the web b of the rib. which extends between the edges of the plates a and is bent down over one of them, or is slit and the resulting tabs bent down alternately over the two edges. Modifications are described in which the web b does not extend between the plates, and the channels c may be reversed. Fig. 13 shows two alternative constructions in which the plane edge of one plate a<x> is slid beneath the channel member on the web or on the opposed plate and secured by bolts r where necessary. Fig. 14 shows a plate a<x> slid beneath the edge of the plate a and provided with a member n engaging the boom e of the rib. The plate a is provided with a channel of the shape shown. Modifications are also described in which offset plate or channel members engage flat or offset plates on the rib.
