Abstract

179,628. Macchioni, A., Hocke, E., and Soc. Anon. Italiana G. Ansaldo & Co. Feb. 7, 1921. Starting.-In twostroke engines having opposed pistons, one governing exhaust ports and the other the scavenging ports, and having means for admitting compressed air between the pistons, the admission ports for the compressed air are controlled by the piston that controls the scavenging ports. Fig. 1 shows a locomotive engine comprising two cylinders 16, 17 each having two pistons 6, 7 controlling respectively scavenging and exhaust ports 4, 5. Compressed air is admitted by a conduit 10 leading to ports 9 also controlled by the pistons 6. The conduit 10 is provided with a valve 12 which has a through-port 18, Fig. 2, and is rotated once for every two cycles of the engine. The port 18 is made tapering, as shown, so that when the valve is moved axially by a governor, the port opening is decreased as the speed of the engine increases. The injection of compressed air commences shortly before the scavenging parts 4 are closed.
