Abstract

162,728. Brown & Co., Ltd., J., and Wood, W. H. Jan. 2, 1920. Valves operated by special means.- Oil led through a gear wheel to the teeth is delivered only to the teeth actually in engagement, and is regulated in quantity. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a stationary ported tubular member 2 is fitted in a hollow spindle 1 of a pinion 4, which is supplied with oil through the hollow spindle and holes 3. The member 2 may be adjusted to vary the quantity delivered and may be mounted in the spindle by ball bearings. In the form shown in Fig. 3, axial holes 5 drilled close to the teeth of a pinion 6 and communicating with the hollow bore of the spindle by channels 8, 9, and with the teeth by holes 11, are fitted with plug valves 12, which are oscillated by toggles 13 operated by an eccentric ring 14 in rolling contact with a track 15 on the gear wheel. In a modification, the valves are arranged to be moved axially by a swash-plate mechanism alternatively. The plugs may be moved radially. In another modification, each of the holes 11 is fitted with a tapered plug-valve, which is normally kept closed by centrifugal force and oil pressure, and which project into the interdental spaces of the pinion so as to be opened by engagement of teeth. In another modification, two auxiliary toothed wheels are provided to mesh with the pinion near the point of engagement with the gear wheel, each auxiliary wheel being provided with a stationary ported tube as in Fig. 2.
