Abstract

1528615 Holding animals C S J SPARKES 16 June 1976 [27 March 1975] 13036/75 Heading A5R An animal control mechanism comprises a control member 16 rotatable about a horizontal axis extending transversely between the sides of a passageway 10 at a height to allow the animal to pass under the axis, the control member comprising a plurality of limbs 18 extending from the axis so that on rotation by means of hand wheel 28 and reduction gearing 29, 31, 33, successive limbs pass through a position depending into the passageway, the control member being adapted for uni-directional rotation, for example by a pawl and ratchet mechanism 24, 26, so that the animal can pass the mechanism in one direction but be prevented from returning by a depending limb. The ratchet mechanism may be releasable to allow rotation in either direction. The free end of each limb may comprise a freely rotatable roller 30 which is adjustable towards and away from the axis to vary the effective length of the limb. Each limb of the control member may have a pair of side frames (42 Figs. 2 and 3 not shown) which are divergent in the direction of rotation of the limb so that the side frames wedge onto the animal. Alternatively each limb may include a pair of side frames (46 Figs. 4 and 5 not shown) which are rotatable to a limited extent about a vertical axis and wedge onto the animal. The passageway may be defined by an animal race or a handling or weighing crate.
