Abstract

1527795 External shoe drum brakes; shoe mounting CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 25 Feb 1977 [1 April 1976] 13165/76 Heading F2E Brake shoe-carrying levers 16, 18, are rendered self-centring by fitting two bow springs 32, 34, each being located between a first abutment, above the pivot, of one lever and a second abutment, below the pivot, of the other lever. A spring-loaded rubbing contact device, e.g. 74, between each shoe and its lever ensures that after the shoe has been brought into contact with the drum on application, which results in the centre of curvature of the lining coinciding with the drum centre, the shoe orientation remains almost constant on release. The brake is released by the raising of an operating rod 142 of an electro-hydraulic thruster 28; it is applied when thruster 28 is de-energized, whereupon springs 128, 130, force a rod 122 downwards, the rod rotating brake lever 24 clockwise. Alternative brake application is by foot operation of a master cylinder (not shown) connected to a pistoncylinder device 100, 102; thrust member 102 is forced leftwards to rotate lever 86, which pulls tie rod 26 along a slot 98 and pushes body 94 to the right. Slack adjusting is effected by a pawl-andratchet device 110 &c., associated with brake lever 24, which effectively shortens tie rod 26 when necessary.
