Abstract

1503085 Removing SO 2 from exhaust gas KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 22 June 1976 [23 June 1975] 25981/76 Heading CIA In the removal of SO 2 from exhaust gas by (1) contacting the gas with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal, ammonium, or magnesium salt of an organic acid to form the corresponding sulphite; (2) blowing O 2 or O 2 -containing gas into at least part of the resultant solution to oxidize the sulphite to sulphate; (3) adding CaCO 3 or Ca(OH) 2 to produce CaSO 4 À2H 2 O and regenerate the alkali metal, ammonium or magnesium organic salt in the solution; (4) separating the from the solution; and (5) recycling the solution together with any solution from step (1) which was not subjected to oxidation in step (2) to the gascontact zone; the improvement comprising causing the absorbent solution to contain not less than 0À3 wt. per cent crystalline immediately prior to contact with the exhaust gas, and maintaining a concentration of alkali metal, ammonium or magnesium organic salt in the solution, immediately after contact, of not more than 2 wt. per cent. The concentration of may be controlled by adjusting the quantity of separated in step (4), and the required concentration of sulphite may be maintained by adjusting the amount of sulphite oxidized in step (2). When the exhaust gas contains Clions, their concentration may be minimized by concentrating a part of the circulating liquid sufficiently to cause Cl<SP>-</SP> to precipitate as salt. Embodiments are illustrated in which the whole or a part of the loaded absorbent is oxidized, and the whole or a part of the oxidized solution is reacted with Ca<SP>++</SP>.
