Abstract

1437738 Drop dispensing apparatus AMERICAN HOSPITAL SUPPLY CORP 25 Feb 1974 [28 June 1973] 8374/74 Heading B8N [Also in Division F1] Apparatus for the dropwise dispensing of a liquid from a liquid reagent bottle 11 comprises a tube 10 formed of relatively rigid and dimensionally stable material, e.g. glass, a long stem 14 of the tube extending downwardly into the bottle through its mouth, and a short stem 16 terminating in a horizontal annular end surface 18 located above the maximum level Y to which liquid can rise by capillary attraction up the stem 14. The stem 16 has an internal bore diameter of 0À25 to 3 millimeters and its outside diameter is preferably no greater than 4 mm. The apparatus described is arranged to dispense drops 36 into a vessel 24 and passes through a stopper 21 on the bottle 11. An air pump 25 is connected by a conduit 26 to the bottle interior through an electromagnetic valve 13 and filter 29. In operation the valve 13 is open and air is pumped into the bottle to discharge liquid therefrom via the tube 10. When a drop 36 leaves the end 18 of the tube it breaks a beam of infra-red light between a source 32 and a receiver 34 thus causing the receiver to actuate an electrical circuit 35 to close the valve 13 and vent the bottle. This results in retraction of the liquid remaining within the tube 10 away from the top 16. After a preset time interval the valve 13 is again opened.
