Abstract

1434245 Laminates R F E CAMUS 26 June 1973 [27 June 1972] 30223/73 Addition to 1350814 Heading B5N [Also in Division E1] A flat construction element comprises a core 51 of expanded cellular resin having a hardened foam structure, a covering of fibre-reinforced resin 60, 61 bonded to each of the major faces of the core, and elongate metal reinforcing members 53, 55 extending parallel to and flush with a major face of the core and being bonded to the core and to the coverings, each member having a wall thickness which is small compared with its maximum dimension. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each strip is of steel and has projections 54, 57 optionally provided with holes 66, each strip being bonded in a recess in the core by a layer 58 of fibreglass reinforced resin, fibre reinforced resin 62 being provided at the edges of the core. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the strips are shaped so as to provide at each end thereof a portion parallel with the minor faces of the core. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the core is formed of a plurality of blocks 11 1 , 11 2 , 11 3 &c., e.g. of expanded polyvinyl chloride between which are interposed sheet metal reinforcing members 12 1-2 , 12 2-3 &c., each reinforcing member having a U-shape with two parallel arms 13 and 14 and a base 15, a resin layer being interposed between each of the faces 18 and 19 of the block and the corresponding inner faces 16 and 17 of the arms and between the inner face 22 of the base 15 and the large face of the block 11, a resin layer being interposed between the external 15<SP>1</SP> of the base and the adjacent block 11, the outer coverings 29, 30 being of hardened resin reinforced with glass fibres. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown) the core comprises a plurality of resin blocks between which the interposed tubular steel reinforcing members of rectangular section.
