Abstract
1432796 Attaching hubs to axles FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 2 June 1973 26406/73 Heading B7C [Also in Division F2] A method of adjusting the clearance between an internally threaded nut 5 screwed on to a threaded part 3 of a wheel spindle 1 on which the inner race 7 of a tapered roller bearing 9 is mounted and the inner race comprises (a) mounting a tool 21 on said nut, which tool has a flange 23 adapted to engage the face of the nut remote from the bearing and an end portion 25 adapted, when the flange engages the face, to project axially beyond the nut towards the bearing a predetermined distance D, (b) turning the nut on the spindle until the portion 25 applies a load to the bearing and a predetermined torque is required to turn the nut, (c) preventing unscrewing of the nut on the spindle (by for example a locking washer 27 and a lock nut 29) and (d) removing the tool from the nut. The nut may be externally threaded to receive the tool, as shown.
