Abstract
1428213 Gas sampling AERONUTRONIC FORD CORP 7 March 1973 [9 March 1972] 11187/73 Heading G1B In a gas sampling system, particularly for obtaining exhaust gas samples from an internal combustion or turbine engine, a chamber receives the emissions, diluent air being supplied thereto so as to form a mixture, the mixture flowing from the chamber to means for regulating the flow thereof comprising a Venturi device 34 operating at critical flow, i.e. under conditions wherein the gases reach sonic speed in the throat of the Venturi, a centrifugal air pump or blower 35 maintaining the sonic condition. Exhaust gases enter at inlet 25 and are mixed with air entering at inlet 28. A heat exchanger 32 is provided in the embodiment shown since the flow-rate at sonic conditions is temperature dependent. Probes 18a and 18b take samples of the air and the mixture of air and exhaust gases which are directed to bags (not shown) and subsequently analyzed. A single blower 35 may be coupled to a plurality of Venturi devices in parallel each having a separate exhaust input. In a further embodiment Fig. 6 (not shown), a constant percentage sample flow-rate is obtained. A probe at the inlet side of the Venturi device comprises a Venturi restriction provided with a small blower to maintain critical flow therethrough which flow is equal to the ratio of the areas of the two Venturis. Further, since the same temperature prevails in both Venturis, no temperature compensation is necessary.
