Abstract

1428139 Laminates GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 16 July 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 33853/73 Heading B5N A sheet moulding compound is produced by sandwiching together top and bottom layers of resinous material and an intermediate layer comprising a plurality of fibrous rovings of glass, sisel, hemp, asbestos, boron, metal, wool, cotton, polyester or nylon, individually impregnated with the resinous material prior to insertion between the top and bottom layers, the rovings being oriented to extent substantially longitudinally of the sheet moulding compound to increase its tensile strength in the longitudinal direction. The resinous material 14 may be spread on moving flexible top and bottom carrier-sheets 16a and 16b, e.g. of polyethylene, between which the bundles of fibrous rovings 12 after passage through a bath of the resinous material 14 and orifices in doctor blade 22 to uniformly impregnate them with the resinous material, are passed, the layers then being pressed together. Resinous material 14 is applied to the top carrier sheet 16a with conventional doctor blade 30. Doctor blade 22 which is used to coat the bottom carrier sheet 16b is provided with a plurality of orifices each comprising a cylindrical portion and incoming tapered portion, arranged in 4 parallel rows, each row horizontally off-set from adjacent rows. The tensile strength of the sheet moulding compound in a direction transverse to the orientation of the continuous rovings may be improved by diverting one or more of the continuous rovings coated with resinous material to a chopping station located downstream from doctor blade 22 and allowing the chopped roving to fall on to the bottom layer of resin and impregnated continuous rovings just before the top layer of resin is combined therewith. The resin which may be polyester, phenolic, epoxy, silicone, alkyd, acrylic or polyethylene, may contain a thickener, e.g. magnesium or calcium oxide. A plurality of layers of sheet moulding compound oriented at angles to each other may be pressed together.
