Abstract
1427390 Liquid crystal compositions MERCK PATENT GmbH 15 Aug 1973 [19 Aug 1972] 39591/73 Heading C4X [Also in Division C2] A modified nematic liquid crystal mixture comprises at least one known nematic compound together with 1 to 35% by wt. of at least one ester of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are alkyl or alkoxy radicals which may be substituted by alkoxy radicals, the radicals R 1 and R 2 each containing up to 10 C atoms, X is CN or NO 2 and Y is H or the same as X. Specified known nematic compounds and ionizing and homotropically orienting additives are those of the following respective formulµ X is a halogen atom, and R 3 and R 4 are alkyl, alkoxy or acyloxy containing up to 18 C atoms, Z is R 5 or R 5 is C 6 -C 18 alkyl or C 4 -C 18 alkoxy or acyloxy, R 6 is alkyl, alkoxy or acyloxy containing up to 18 C atoms, and n is 0 or 1. The esters of Formula I are preferably added in such an amount to the known nematic compounds that they form eutectic mixtures therewith. Cholesteric materials may be present in up to 10% by weight. Examples are given in which specific nematic mixtures are prepared. The esters of Formula I generally have negative dielectric anisotropy which may predominate even in a mixture with components of positive anisotropy, and the mixtures are useful in electrooptic dynamic scattering display devices.
