Abstract

1426111 Producing chlorine dioxide electrolytically G M CONFORTO 10 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 20769/74 Heading C7B ClO 2 is produced electrolytically by feeding an aqueous solution of NaCl and NaClO 2 , e.g. from supply tank 8 via pipe 9, to a cell 1 comprising anode and cathode compartments 201, 301 separated by permeable partition 4, the electrolyte level in the cell being maintained constant e.g. by a float valve 11 connected to pipe 9 in the feed compartment 101, electrolyzing e.g. by connecting the anode 5 and cathode 6 to a rectifier 7, and collecting the anolyte formed by an aqueous solution of NaCl and ClO 2 e.g. via pipe 14. The anolyte from pipe 14 may be discharged to a separation tower 21, Fig.2 (not shown), through which air is bubbled to pass (e.g. via pipe 23) to an adsorption tower (24) through which water is fed, to separate the ClO 2 from the NaCl solution which is recycled (via pipe 27 and tank 8) back to the cell. NaOH catholyte solution may be discharged via pipe 12.
