Abstract

1418080 Control systems for discharge lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 May 1973 [9 May 1972 6 Dec 1972 21 March 1973] 21329/73 Heading H2H A system for starting and running a gas discharge lamp comprises a transistor device for superimposing high frequency, high voltage pulses on the alternating supply waveform so as to enhance the starting of the lamp. A low pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp 5 having preheatable electrodes 3, 4 is connected to an A.C. source 1, 2 by way of a ballast inductor 6. The ends of the electrodes 3, 4 remote from the supply terminals 1, 2 are connected to a full wave diode bridge 9-12 across the output terminals 13, 14 of which is connected a transistor 17. A resistor capacitor timing network 19, 20 is also connected across terminals 13, 14 such that as the capacitor 20 reaches a predetermined charge a diac 21 breaks down to render the transistor 17 conducting to cause current to flow through the electrodes 3, 4. The capacitor 20 now discharges whereupon the diac 21 recovers and the transistor 17 goes non-conductive, cutting off current flow in the electrodes 3, 4. The cycle then repeats until the electodes 3, 4 have become heated sufficiently such that the high voltage pulse produced by cutting off the transistor 17 causes ignition of the lamp. The time constant of the circuit 19, 20 is such that the conduction and non-conduction cycle of the transistor 17 is at a frequency considerably higher than the A.C. supply frequency. Simultaneously with the starting operation a second resistor capacitor circuit 23, 24 having a longer time constant than the circuit 19, 20, in charging the capacitor 24 such that when the transistor 22 is rendered conductive to short circuit capacitor 20 the starting operation is terminated. In other embodiments positive and negative temperature coeffieint resistors are used to terminate the starting operation and in which the timing circuit 23, 24 is connected directly to the A.C. source 1, 2 by way of a diode.
