Abstract

1417979 Lever lids METAL BOX Ltd 23 Aug 1973 [10 Nov 1972] 52042/72 Heading B8D A can comprises a can body 1 provided with cylindrical neck 2 joined by surrounding channel to the can body and terminating in a mouth-defining curl 3, and lid having a skirt depending from a crown 4, and including an inner annular wall 5 having an interference fit along the length of the neck, and an outer annular wall 6 spaced from and joined to the inner wall at its end remote from the crown by a curved rim portion 7. As shown, the mouthdefining curl 3 is inwardly-directed and the inner skirt wall terminates in a partial, outturned curl 8 spaced from the outer wall to permit flexing of the inner wall. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the mouth-defining curl 10 is outwardly directed and inset so that its maximum diameter is the same as that of the neck. In another modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the upper end of the outer wall 6 terminates in an inturned partial curl 8. In another aspect of the invention, Fig. 4 (not shown), the skirt comprises a single wall 5, which terminates in an outwardly curled bead 7. Removal may be effected by levering up of the rim portion 7 using the neck/body seam as a fulcrum.
