Abstract

1416575 Extruding heat shrinkable tubes SAKAI KASEI KOGYO KK 18 April 1973 18853/73 Headings B5A and B5B A biaxially oriented heat shrinkable thermoplastic resin tube, is produced by drawing a vertically downwardly extruding tube S around a frusto-conical upstream portion 7 of a mandrel B, to produce diametrical stretching and oreintation, and then around a following downstream cylindrical portion 8 of the mandrel, to produce axial stretching and orientation, over a distance H which is adjustable, prior to entry into water coolant at a level 10<SP>11</SP> in a surround- ing cooling bath 10. By varying the distance H, by vertical adjustment of the bath 10 along a rod 16, whilst maintaining constant the speed at which the tube S is drawn from the mandrel B by pull rolls (19) Fig. 1 (not shown) in a water tank (18), the rate of stretching and amount of axial orientation is varied over the distance H independently of the dimensions of the tube S<SP>1</SP>. The mandrel B is supported by a tube 4, attached to the die mandrel 1 and from passages 5 of which supporting air at atmospheric pressure is admitted, via die passages 2, 3. The water bath 10 seals around the tube at a seal 12, and water is circulated thereto via an inlet 9, and overflowing at the bath upper level. The die is supplied with the thermoplastics from a vertically extending screw, and barrel surrounded by electrical heaters. An air cooling ring may also be provided intermediate the die and mandrel.
