Abstract
1416139 Silica UNILEVER Ltd 22 Feb 1973 [26 Nov 1971] 54996/71 Heading C1A The invention comprises a precipitated silica having an ignition weight loss of at least 3% between 120‹ and 1000‹ C. and a strength such that a sample of the silica having a weight mean particle size on a substantially unimodal distribution in the size range 10 to 20 microns requires less than 6500 joules of ultrasonic energy (on a defined basis) to reduce the weight mean particle size of the sample to below 3 microns, which silica, after fluid energy milling, has a performance index (as defined) of at least 7. The silica is obtained by preparing primary silica particles by reacting, at a temperature between 85‹ C. and the boiling point, an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution and an acid to a degree of neutralization and SiO 2 concentration as indicated by Area A defined by points: 56, 6À6 ; 56, 2À8 ; 14, 1À0 ; 14, 2À8, flocculating the silica by the addition of an effective amount of an alkali metal salt, precipitating further silica in the presence of the salt by addition of further acid or acid and silicate and reducing the pH of the mixture to below 7, isolating the silica so produced and subjecting the silica to purification and single pass drying. The product may be subject to, e.g. fluid-energy milling to give a product in which at least 30% is less than 0À2 microns particle size. The preferred degree of neutralization is that shown in area B defined by the points: 56, 6À6 ; 56, 2À8 ; 14, 2À8.
