Abstract

1410822 Piezoelectric transducers; microphone circuits MARCONI CO Ltd 3 Oct 1973 [5 Oct 1972] 45921/72 Heading H4J A microphone or other electro-acoustic transducer comprises a sheet 1 (Fig. 1) of polymer or plastics material which is permanently polarized and has electrodes 2, 3 on its opposite faces 4, 5. The sheet a preferably of polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl fluoride, polytrifluorochlorethylene or nylon. Electrode 2 has a conductive arm 6 while electrode 3 has a conductive arm 8 extending in the opposite directions. Wires (13, 14), Fig. 2 (not shown), are secured to the arms 6, 8 by conductive epoxy resin or by mechanical means. Sheet 1 is polarized by heating it, together with the electrodes 2, 6 and arms 3, 8, to 100‹ C. and applying a voltage of 500V (equivalent to an electric field of 150 kV cm<-1> between faces 4, 5 for one hour whilst heating is maintained. The sheet is then cooled to room temperature while maintaining the applied voltage. The sheet 1 is held taut between two clamping discs (10, 11) Fig. 3 (not shown) of plastics material. One disc (10) has a central circular aperture (15) to expose electrode 2 to acoustic waves. It is thought that the transducer relies upon the piezoelectric effect. The microphone 16 (Fig. 4) is connected between ground and the gate electrode 18 of a F.E.T. 19. Drain electrode 20 is grounded while source electrode 22 is connected via resistor 23 (68 K#) to the negative terminal of a voltage source 24. Bias for the gate electrode 18 is derived via a resistor 25 (10<12> Q) from the negative terminal of source 24. The output is taken from terminals 26, 27.
