Abstract

1408131 Tool changers GLACIER METAL CO Ltd 8 Sept 1972 [9 June 1971] 19551/71 Heading B3B A machine tool including a tool spindle and tool change apparatus comprises a support member, e.g. an indexable drum 12, which carries a plurality of means 11 for gripping tools 14, the said support member being movable translationally and rotationally about an axis parallel with the spindle 20 to place a tool from one of the gripping means 11 into coaxial alignment with the tool spindle when the tool spindle 20 is in a machining position, the spindle having a socket to receive the shank of the tool and jaw means for engaging a shoulder on the shank and an actuator arranged to move the jaw means against the wall of the socket to cause the jaw means to engage the shoulder positively. The drum 12 is movable between a magazine store, where tools 14 are loaded on to the gripping means 11 by a pneumatically operated arm and gripper, and a position adjacent the spindle 20. The drum 12 is indexable about an axis parallel to the spindle and is movable in the direction of this axis to insert and remove tools from the spindle. The end of the spindle protrudes from a front surface of the machine tool to prevent tools in the grippers 11 hitting the machine tool. Each tool has a taper shank 14a and a groove (36) (Fig. 3, not shown) which is gripped by jaws (24) mounted within the spindle. A pneumatically operated draw bar (29) retracts the jaws into a tapered bore to lock them into the groove (36) and draw the tool shank into its spindle socket to interengage driving keys and slots.
