Abstract

1405587 Board manufacture NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 13 July 1972 [21 July 1971 8 Feb 1972] 34243/71 and 5817/72 Headings D2A and D2B [Also in Division B5] A board making process comprises depositing a layer of an aqueous slurry comprising a mixture of a fibrous waste material and a mineral waste material and controlling the water content of the slurry so as to produce a coherent agglomerated layer having a degree of wet strength, and then forming the layer under heat and pressure. The aqueous slurry may be deposited upon a liquid permeable support from a hopper or an extruder having means for discharging the slurry at a predetermined rate. The liquid permeable support may be an endless moving belt of metal or plastics mesh or gauze. The water content of the slurry may be regulated by means of a series of pressure rolls, by vacuum e.g. employing a cylindrical vacuum filter, by passage between top and bottom belts moving between converging fixed plates, (Fig. 3 not shown), or by drying. A plurality of formed agglomerated layers may be superimposed one on the other and laminated, or a single agglomerated layer may be formed and further layers deposited thereon by means of hoppers or extruders to form a composite which is then pressed to obtain a laminated agglomerated layer. Forming under heat and pressure may comprise moulding or passage between pressure rolls. The boards may be embossed. The fibrous waste material may be cellulosic fibres derived from waste paper, waste chopped rags, sisal, Boardmaking Apparatus. Typical apparatus for making board from papermill sludge effluents may comprise a screw extruder 3 for jute, or hessian, or nylon, polyester or polypropylene fibres, or asbestos or glass fibres. The mineral component may be a clay, e.g. china clay, an oxide e.g. silica, titanium dioxide, or antimony trioxide, or calcium carbonate. The waste materials may be derived from food, tobacco, quarry and mineral wastes, asbestos slurry wastes, and paper mill wastes. Additives such as fillers e.g. silica, quartz, limestone, pulverised fuel ash; styrene-butadiene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, and acrylic resins; phenol-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, and urea-formaldehyde resins; flame retardants e.g. borates, boric acid, monoammonium phosphate and aluminium hydroxide; alum and starch; may be incorporated in the slurry. The agglomerated layer may contain a reinforcing medium e.g. glass fibres; or be laminated to on one or both surfaces with a reinforcing layer e.g. of woven hessian or glass fibre mat; or, the reinforcing medium may be sandwiched between two agglomerated layers and laminated by passage through pressure rolls. The process may be used for making insulation fibre boards, hardboards, and packaging boards. depositing the sludge effluent on an endless permeable belt, and chain-driven pressure rolls 7 for removing water from the sludge. The belt may be provided with cleaning water sprays 8 and rotary brushes 9.
