Abstract

1405013 Mixing apparatus; conical mills WINN & COALES (DENSO) LTD 6 Feb 1973 [10 Feb 1972] 6278/72 Headings BIC and B2A Apparatus for mixing, emulsifying, or disintegrating solids in the presence of liquids, comprises inner and outer coaxial selectively rotatable members having facing cooperating surfaces, the surface of one member having a plurality of grooves and the facing member of the other member having at least one blade a guide face adjacent at least one side of the blade and radially inward of the. blade and a depression adjacent the guide face, the width of each groove being greater than the thickness of the blade. As shown a frusto-conical stator 7 has a plurality of grooves 9 and cooperates with a rotor 1 having detachable, blades 2, guide surfaces 6 and depressions 5. The rotor may be axially adjustable to alter the clearance As depicted each groove, blade, guide surface and depression is co-planar with the axis of rotation but in modifications they may be angled, i.e. lie on helices (see Figs 3 to 6, 9 and 10, not shown). In this case, with a frustoconioal stator and rotor, reversal of the direction of rotation alters the rate of flow through the device. In other modifiiations there may be guide surfaces (6, Fig 5 not shown) on both sides of the blades, and the blades may be held by clamps (16) which may also act as guide surfaces. The widths of the blades, clamps and guide surfaces may be uniform or tapered, the cross-section of the depressions and grooves may take various forms but rectangular cross-section grooves as depicted in Fig 7 (not shown) are suitable for reducing refractory solids. The device may be condensed in material in a container which may have a heat exchange jacket, and be driven from above or below. The bearing 10 is accommodated in a cavity 14 in the, rotor, which retains an air pocket to prevent material being treated reaching the bearing. In other embodiments the rotor may be cylindrical (see Figs 9, 10 not shown); and the device may be adapted for continuous discharge operation by using a closed station with an inlet and outlet (Figs 15 and 16, not shown) and connecting it with a pipeline. A plurality of such embodiments may be arranged in series or parallel.
