1403666 Coiling and twisting J W G HUHNEN 27 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1972] 9498/73 Heading B3E In a machine for winding coil springs, the wire is guided by a gripper rotatable about the axis of the wire in the region of the gripper, and the length of wire between the wire source and the gripper is maintained free from plastic deformation. The coil winding arrangement is shown in Fig. 1, the winding mandrel 23 and a splined shaft 24 being rotatably supported in arms 22 themselves slidably and non- rotatably mounted on a fixed shaft 21. The mandrel is rotated by gear 31 driven by a rack (not shown) in a slider 27 reciprocated by an eccentric drive 28 and is moved axially by a follower wheel 25 on one arm 22 engaging an inclined surface 26 on the slider. The wire 29 is gripped by rolls 35 grooved at 40 and mounted in a drum 36 rotatable by a sinusoidal drive motor 37, or alternatively driven by slider 27. The wire also passes through a guide 34 which co-operates with a shear 32 operated by cam 38 driven by gears 38 from drive 28. During a coil forming cycle, the wire is clamped to the mandrel by clamp 30 and the mandrel 23 is rotated and moved axially, and the wire is twisted. On completion of winding during first half of a cycle, the wire is severed, and the mandrel returns to its datum position during the second half of the cycle. The wire may also be twisted in the reverse sense to store a twist in the wire which will be cancelled during the next coiling operation. The wire supply arrangement is shown in Fig. 2, where a coil 47 of wire is located on fingers 49 in a table 48 rotatably mounted on a platform 52 and driven by motor 50. A device 51 continuously ensures dynamic balance of the table and coil. The platform is supported in spring manner from a fixed pin 55. The wire passes through a guide loop 57 and between gripping rollers 58 mounted in a drum 59 rotatable by motor 16.
