Abstract
1402544 Mixed metal oxide fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 June 1972 [5 July 1971] 31419/71 Heading C1A A mixed metal oxide fibre is prepared by fibrizing a viscous composition comprising an organic solvent and (a) an alkoxide of a first metal and an alkoxide of a second metal or (b) a mixed alkoxide of said metals wherein the oxides of said metals can form together a spinel, removing solvent from the fibre thus formed and heating the fibre to decompose the metal alkoxides or mixed metal alkoxide to form the mixed metal oxide. The first metal may be Mg, Zn, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ca or Ti and the second metal, Al, Fe, Cr, Ti, Ru, Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or Zn and the alkoxide may contain methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl groups. The solvent may comprise, benzene, toluene, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers and mixtures thereof and the metal alkoxide may be present therein in amounts substantially proportional to the stoichiometric ratio of the metals in the mixed oxide. An organic polymer may be added to the composition to increase the viscosity thereof to 0À1 to 100 poise to assist fibrizing which may be carried out by centrifugal spinning, drawing, blowing or extrusion through a spinneret. The resulting fibres may be contacted with water vapour to partially hydrolyse the alkoxide of the first and/or second metal or the mixed alkoxide of said metals and to form a gel from which the solvent may be removed at 30‹ to 150‹ C. and the fibres subsequently heated to at least 150‹ C. to produce the mixed oxide or alternatively the fibres may be subjected to steam at 200‹ to 500‹ C. The mixed oxide fibres may be heated to at least 800‹ C. to produce the spinel crystal form.
