Abstract

1402475 Delivering measured quantities of liquid ALFA-LAVAL AB 5 June 1973 [19 June 1972] 26846/73 Heading B8N In a fluid apparatus, such as a liquid measuring apparatus for dispensing foodstuffs, the piston 2 is provided with a seal 24, 25 at each end and the cylinder 1 is provided with a zone 20, 21 at each end to facilitate cleaning of the seals, the zones being in communication with the cylinder ports 3 to 6 and arranged so that when the piston is in an end position, the seal nearest the cylinder end in question is located within the zone while the other seal seals against the cylinder. Recesses 26 in the piston allow escape of gas bubbles. A pump 19 continuously supplies the liquid to the apparatus from a container 18 and a control unit 17 operates the opening and closing of valves 9 to 12 upon receiving signals initiated by the piston at the ends of its stroke. The piston 2 may be reciprocated by the liquid supply acting alternately on opposite ends of the piston or by a piston-rod. Cleaning of the piston seal 24 may be effected by maintaining the piston in the upper end position while cleaning liquid is caused to flow from an open inlet 3 to an open outlet 4. Cleaning of the seal 25 may be then effected similarly at the bottom end of the cylinder. Alternatively, cleaning may be effected by operating the valves 9 to 12 as in normal operation and allowing the cleaning fluid to reciprocate the piston.
