Abstract

A fibre fleece containing heat-weldable material is consolidated in the nip of a two-roll calender by the use of heat and pressure. The calender rolls both have a surface patterning formed from elevations and depressions. The surface patterning of at least one of these rollers is formed by different groups of elevations. At least two types of groups differ from one another in a different size or density of the elevations in the respective group. If a dye-transfer foil is conveyed through the nip of this two-roll calender at the same time as the fibre fleece, the fibre fleece can be consolidated and dyed in the same operation. The properties of the consolidated nonwoven thus obtained can be varied, as desired, within a wide range by an appropriate selection of the size, number and/or density of the overlap regions of the elevations in the surface patternings of the two co-operating calender rolls in the nip.
