Abstract

1483207 Suction collection system SORENSON RESEARCH CO INC 27 Sept 1974 [23 Oct 1973] 42158/74 Heading A5R An aseptic suction collection system comprises a cannister 20 containing two flexible plastics reservoirs, a first reservoir 34 for collecting liquid and a second reservoir 44 communicating with the first, a rigid plastics cover 26, with an engaging flange 28, which forms one end of the first reservoir and has an inlet 32 connected to a collecting tube 82, an outlet 30 connected to a vacuum line 80 and a filter 36. The communication between the two reservoirs is by two sleeves 42, 46 in telescopic relationship, with a plug 50, Fig. 1, or 51, Fig. 3, fitted into sleeve 42, the plug having a larger diameter cylinder, an intermediate diameter cylinder 62 and diametrically placed extension 58 having small projections 60 at its end adjacent the intermediate cylinder 62 to prevent contact of sleeve 42 with said cylinder, maintaining thus a fluid flow channel, and projections 59 at its other end for engaging the inner surface ,of sleeve 42. In use blood is sucked in through tube 82, filtered by filter 36 and collected in the first reservoir, the air in the second reservoir being simultaneously sucked out, preventing inflow of blood; when the tube 82 starts to suck in air the pressure in reservoir 34 will increase and start to force liquid 86 into the second reservoir where it is then aseptically contained. When the two reservoirs are pulled apart the plug, 50 or 51, is pulled up into sleeve 46 to automatically seal the second reservoir 44. Inlet 22 in the side of cannister 20 creates a vacuum around the reservoirs preventing their collapse. There is a sealed inlet 64 in reservoir 44 to allow subsequent transfusion of the collected blood. In a modification to the plug 51, Fig. 4 (not shown), the extension 58 is replaced by a smaller diameter cylinder and inlet holes 48, Fig. 1, are provided in sleeve 42 adjacent its end.
