Abstract

1475985 Collecting floating matter from water BALLAST-NEDAM GROEP NV 16 Sept 1974 [25 Feb 1974] 9211/73 Heading BID [Also in Division B7] Apparatus for collecting floating oil or solids from water comprises a reservoir defined by at least one wall which extends down into the water and at least one power driven rotor (14 Fig. 2 not shown) or a nozzle 91, which is supplied with gas or water or mixed gas and water, to create a downward flow 8 in the water which carries the oil or solids under the lower edge of the wall so that they rise to form a layer 2 wthin the reservoir. In Fig. 3, the reservoir is formed against a quay 27 by a floating pontoon 17, pump 21 supplies nozzle 91 with water from beneath baffle 11 and pump 26 removes collected oil. Fig. 1 (not shown) represents a floating pontoon enclosing a reservoir and whose nozzles are supplied with gas. Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates an inflated pontoon to be dropped from an aircraft on to an oil slick. Weighted flexible walls extend below the water, and a pump (39) delivers water to nozzles 91 from a submerged extended hose (45). Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) illustrate a self-propelled oil-collecting ship with a row of angularly adjustable nozzles 91 directing flow beneath the forward wall of a reservoir in the bows. The reservoir has a rear outlet for water in the floor and a pump to convey oil into a stern storage tank. Fig. 7 shows apparatus for filling an oil drum 51 from the reservoir 6. Oil enters the drum at 55 with some water which accumulates at 57. When the oil level reaches float 59 it lifts a valve 61 so that the water may be drawn off through pipe 64 by injector 70. Viscosity-sensitive valve 69 clones to prevent oil following the water into injector 70, and pressure monitor 73 then closes valves 79, 80 and actuates alarm 81. The drum is then replaced by an empty one.
