Abstract

1469051 Blow moulding OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 14 April 1975 [16 April 1974] 15226/75 Heading B5A A plastics article 82 is blow moulded in successive preform blowing and final article blowing moulds, 16 and 31, using the same blow tube 60 which is mounted on a turret 45 rotatable to convey the blown preform 96 between the two blow moulds. The preform mould 16 is closed about an extruded parison 11 which is severed by a knife 29. The tail flash is removed by plates 28 and the mould assembly is moved obliquely to lie under a cylinder 70. Downward displacement of the piston-rod 73 in the cylinder 70 forces one of the blow tubes 60, which are mounted through each end of arms 46, 47 of the turret 45, into the neck of the parison in the mould. A flange on the blow tube severs excess neck flash. Air is supplied through piston 73 to the blow tube 60 to inflate the parison, the mould 16 is opened, and the piston-rod 73 is retracted to allow a spring in the arm 46 to raise the blow tube 60 with the preform 96 thereon clear of the mould. The arm 46, 47 is rotated by a driven shaft 40 to bring the preform to the final blow mould 31. A member 83 is brought into engagement with the top of arm 47 by the closing of the mould and supplies air to the blow tube to inflate the preform. In Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) blow tubes are mounted on each of four arms (110) so that 90 degrees rotation of their support shaft (101) brings a blown preform 96 to an intermediate station for cooling in the air or enclosure in a heating or cooling chamber. The arms (110) are raised to lift the preforms clear of the mould during rotation by a cylinder (102) acting on the rotary shaft (101).
