Abstract
1467083 Purifying coke oven gas H HÍLTER 25 Feb 1975 [13 March 1974 31 Aug 1974 17 Sept 1974 13 Feb 1975] 7743/75 Heading C5E [Also in Division C1] A process for purifying detarred and cooled coke oven gas comprises removing NH 3 therefrom with a water wash optionally containing H 2 SO 4 , and removing H 2 S by washing with a solution containing Na 2 CO 3 or K 2 CO 3 , the H 2 S being removed from the wash liquid with CO 2 and the wash liquid recycled, wherein NaOH or KOH is introduced into the wash liquid to replenish it before it is recycled and a corresponding amount of wash liquid is removed. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 1, the detarred and cooled coke oven gas 1 is washed at 2 by water/ H 2 SO 4 mixture. The effluent 4 of the wash is led to an ammonium sulphate recovery plant 5. The NH 3 -free gas 6 is washed at 7 with the recycled wash liquid of circulation 8 which contains NaOH, Na 2 CO 3 , Na 2 S, NaHS (or corresponding K compounds) to provide pure gas 13. Part 11 of the effluent is passed to the ammonium sulphate recovery plant 5 and mixed with effluent 4 of the ammonia wash to provide (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 at 15 and waste 16 containing aqueous H 2 S. An amount of KOH or NaOH solution 12 corresponding to the part 11 of the wash liquid removed replenishes the alkaline wash liquid upstream of the H 2 S removal wash. Effluent from the H 2 S removal largely passes to be treated by CO 2 10 at wash station 9 producing waste 14 containing H 2 S. The waste 16 and waste 14 may be combined to form inputs to plants producing H 2 SO 4 or S. The NH 3 and H 2 S washings may be carried out simultaneously or reversed in order.
