Abstract
1460312 Combustible gas TOKYO GAS CO Ltd 1 March 1974 [1 March 1973 (2)] 9403/74 Heading C5E [Also in Divisions F1 and F4] A method of burning hydrocarbon fuels in which the production of nitrogen oxides is reduced comprises a primary combustion step in which a mixture of the fuel with less than 70% of the amount of air theoretically required for complete combustion is burned, a primary combustion completing step in which the products of the primary combustion step are reacted in the presence of a catalyst to produce a gaseous mixture comprising mainly hydrogen and carbon monoxide but substantially no hydrocarbons as combustible components, and a secondary combustion step in which the gaseous mixture is burned with additional air to complete the combustion. The catalyst used in the primary combustion completing step can be a nickel catalyst and the secondary combustion step can also be carried out using a nickel catalyst. The gases leaving the primary combustion completing step can be cooled by using them in a heat absorbing process prior to the secondary combustion step. A combustion unit is provided in which a hydrocarbon fuel 12 is partially burned in admixture with a portion of the air supply 10 and the mixture produced is passed through a catalyst containing primary combustion completing chamber 2; the gas produced is then burned in a secondary combustion chamber 4 with a further portion of the air supply 10 and excess air is mixed with the combustion products in the dilution chamber 6; the hot gas produced is suitable for driving a gas turbine.
