Abstract
1459967 Upgrading titaniferous ores WENDELL E DUNN Inc and W E DUNN 16 June 1975 25608/75 Headings C1A and C1N In a process for beneficiating a titaniferous ore wherein a fluidized bed of the ore mixed with 10-30% by weight of coke is contacted at elevated temperatures with Cl 2 to produce an upgraded ore and vapourous iron chlorides the gaseous iron chlorides are contacted with O 2 at a temperature of 1250-1380‹ K. in the chamber above the fluidized bed to form a gaseous cloud of a partially oxidized mixture of iron chlorides, iron oxides, O 2 and Cl 2 , passing the mixture through a cooled flue at a superficial velocity of at least 50 ft./sec. whereby substantially all the remaining iron chlorides are further oxidized to Cl 2 and an equilibrium layer of Fe 2 O 3 formed on the inside wall of the flue which is continuously abraded by solid products passing therethrough and separating Cl 2 from unreacted FeCl 3 and Fe 2 O 3 . The unreacted FeCl 3 may be recycled to the reactor and Cl 2 may be re-used in the process. The partially oxidized mixture is typically cooled in the flue from a temperature of 1400-1575‹ K. to about 1000‹ K.
