Abstract

1458090 Nuts and bolts YAMAMOTO BYORA CO Ltd 23 July 1974 [8 Sept 1973 (3) 30 Nov 1973] 32469/74 Heading F2H A bolt 11 (Figs. 2 and 4) or nut (Fig. 6) has a head or body portion 12, 28 which has external grooves 15, 30 extending substantially parallel to the axis of the portion, the portion 12, 28, apart from the grooves, having a circular crosssection centred at O and the cross-section of each groove being defined by the arc of a circle (preferably a semi-circle 19) centred at O 1 , the centre O 1 lying on a radius of the portion 12, 28 between limits defined by centre O and the point of intersection of tangents 25, 25a to the portion 12, 28 at the edges P, P 1 of the grooves, the grooves being engageable with a mating tool (Fig. 3, not shown) to drive the bolt or nut. Preferably the centre O 1 lies between the point of intersection of tangents 25, 25a and a chord connecting the edges P, P 1 . There may be between four and eight, preferably six, grooves 15, 30. The diameter (do) of the circle defining the grooves is defined by the equation where n is the number of grooves and Do the basic diameter of the portion 12, 28. The external surface of portion 12, 28 and thus the grooves 15, 30, may be inclined 1-10 degrees to the axis of the portion.
