Abstract
1455536 Disc-brake actuators; slack-adjusters SOC ANON DBA 5 Feb 1975 [27 Feb 1974] 4944/75 Heading F2E A mechanical brake actuator comprises first and second extensible members 28, 32 connected by screw-threading 30; a piston 20 acting on the friction member 22 and connected to the second extensible member 32 by a spring 50 which permits relative movement between piston and extensible member in one direction of rotation ; and a wear adjusting element 58 normally connected to member 28 by a one-way transmission which enables element 58 to turn relative to member 28 through an angle corresponding to the wear on the friction member on brake application and causes the second extensible member 32 to turn through said angle and so advance relative to member 28 on brake release. As shown, the wear adjusting element 58 engages element 28 through one-way teeth 60, 62 urged with engagement by spring and has arcuate slots 68 (Fig. 2) which receive rods 70 extending through member 32. Member 28 is rotated clockwise by lever 34 to apply the brake, relative rotation of member 28 and element 58 occurring when the degree of rotation slots 68 engage rods 70. When lever 34 is released teeth 60, 62 cause member 28 and element 58 to rotate together so that when the ends of apertures 68 again abut rods 70 element 58 tends to entrain extensible member 32 and rotate it relative to piston 20, spring 48 permitting this rotation. Member 32 is therefore extended relative to member 28. The actuator is re-set, to permit replacement of the friction member, by withdrawing a plunger 78 so that spring 88 can, via a flange 84 on sleeve 76, urge element 58 away from member 28; lever 34 can then be rotated anti-clockwise until the parts reassume their initial position. In the embodiment of Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the one-way transmission is located on the end of the member 28 remote from the lever 34 and relative rotation of the wear adjusting element and member 28 is caused by a tongue and groove arrangement.
