Abstract

1454769 Locking threads KEYSTONE CONSOLIDATED INDUSTRIES Inc 17 Dec 1973 58243/73 Heading F2H A threaded fastener for use with a mating part having an internal thread, comprises a shank 11 with an external thread including a locking portion 14, having constant crest and root diameters, extending along at least a part of the shank, along which portion 14, the root pitch varies between a maximum and a minimum value over one or more cycles, so that interference is encountered as the fastener engages a mating thread. As described the pitch is constant over the non-locking portion and within portion 14 preferably decreases by equal increments per turn over three turns and then increases at the same increments over succeeding turns to return to the maximum value A where it remains for two turns. The locking portion may extend over the whole length of the shank or may be bordered on one or both sides by a non-locking portion. The variations of pitch may be produced by altering the lead angle of the thread or by varying the axial thickness thereof.
