Abstract

1450642 Grafted chloroprene rubber concentrates MONSANTO CO 11 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 06121/74 Heading C3G A fire retardant interpolymer concentrate comprises (A) from 1 to 82% by weight of a polymer of at least one mono (alkyl- or halosubstituted or unsubstituted) aromatic monomer and from 0 to 90% by weight of the polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated nitrile and (B) from 99 to 18% of a grafted chloroprene rubber, the rubber being grafted with (1) at least one mono (alkyl- or halo-substituted or unsubstituted) aromatic monomer and (2) from 0 to 90% of the total monomers grafted of an ethylenically unsaturated nitrile, the chloroprene rubber being present in from 15% to 75% by weight of the interpolymer concentrate and polymer (A) and grafted rubber (B) being obtained as said concentrate by polymerization of the monomer or monomers in the presence of the chloroprene rubber. The grafted rubber may comprise a first component having a weight average grafted rubber particle size of from 0À01 to 0À35 micron and a "high" grafted monomer proportion of from 10 to 100% by weight of the rubber and a second component having a particle size of from 0À4 to 1À5 micron and a "low" grafted monomer proportion of 5 to 40% by weight of the rubber. The concentrates are dispersed in a polymer of a vinyl aromatic monomer and 0 to 90% of ethylenically unsaturated nitrile by blending in the melt phase. Examples are given in which (a) chloroprene rubber is grafted in aqueous emulsion with styrene and acrylonitrile, the resulting concentrate being co-coagulated with styreneacrylonitrile copolymer latex and melt colloided with Sb 2 O 3 ; (b) mixtures of "high" and "low" grafted chloroprene rubbers produced as in (a) are formed into blends as in (a); and (c) a blend produced as in (a) is mixed with a butadiene rubber grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile.
