Abstract

1445652 Sulphate process TiO 2 AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 8 May 1974 [25 May 1973] 20398/74 Headings C1A and C1N In a process for the production of a titanium dioxide pigment by the leaching of a titaniferrous ore with H 2 SO 4 , the ferric iron in the liquor is catalytically reduced with SO 2 or a soluble sulphite or bisulphite and the sulphuric acid generated by the reduction is neutralized with the compound selected from MgO, MgCO 3 , MgSO 3 , NH 3 , NH 4 OH, NH 4 HSO 3 (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 to reduce H 2 SO 4 -TiO 2 weight ratio in the leach liquor to 1À75-2À20 prior to hydrolysis to precipitate Ti(OH) 2 . The reduction may be performed before, after or during addition of the neutralizing agent. Suitable catalysts are activated carbon, charcoal or thiocyanate ions. Ferrous sulphate formed may be crystallized out.
