Abstract

1445239 Catalytic decomposition of ammonia MITSUBISHI CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Sept 1974 [12 Sept 1973 (2)] 38474/74 Heading C1A Ammonia is catalytically decomposed to nitrogen by contacting a gas mixture containing ammonia and oxygen with a molar ratio of oxygen : ammonia of 3 : 1 or more with a ruthenium and/or a platinum catalyst at 150- 400‹ C. The gas mixture may be contacted first with a ruthenium catalyst and then with a platinum catalyst. The amount of ammonia in the gas mixture may be 2% or less by volume of the total gas. The catalyst may be used with a gas flow at a space velocity of 1000- 100,000 hr.<SP>-1</SP>. The molar ratio NH 3 : NO x in the gas after passing through the first catalyst layer may be 1-10 : 1. The ruthenium and/or platinum may be supported on a carrier at 0À01-2À0% by weight.
