Abstract
1441063 Bi-polar electrolytic cells NIPPON SODA CO Ltd 12 March 1974 [13 March 1973] 10960/74 Heading C7B A bi-polar electrolytic cell assembly for the electrolysis of aqueous alkali metal chloride comprises a housing 1 and a plurality of bi-polar electrode units, each comprising a hollow partition 6 having extending therefrom on one side hollow pectinate anodes 4 connected to a backplate forming that side of the hollow partition, and on the other side hollow permeable pectinate cathodes 5 integrally formed with a permeable backscreen which is inserted in a window shaped aperture in the other side of the partition; the cavities within the cathode fingers and the hollow partition interconnecting; the cathode structure comprising cathode fingers 5 and the backscreen e.g. formed of Fe wire screen material and being covered with a permeable diaphragm material, e.g. asbestos, whereby the electrolytic cell formed between adjacent partitions and including interleaved anode and cathode fingers is divided into anode compartment and cathode compartment; and the anodes and cathodes attached to each partition are electrically connected together by means of electrically conductive bars disposed within the hollow anodes and cathodes, and which extend through apertures in the adjacent wall of the hollow partition and are attached to a current connecting plate positioned between the walls of the hollow partition. Openings may be provided in either the backplate or the backscreen, Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown), to enable nuts used in connecting anodes or cathodes to the current connecting plate to be reached. The inner surface of the cell housing and cover thereof, and the outer surfaces of the partitions may be coated with e.g. rubber. The anode walls may be of solid plate or of foraminous or louvred sheet material, and may be of Ti coated with e.g. a Pt group metal. The conductive bars associated with the anodes may be of Ti or of Fe, steel or Cu coated with Ti. Electric power is supplied to cathode and anode endwalls (forming mono-polar electrodes) via bus bars 9; and hydrogen and catholyte outlets 61, 31 and 62, 32 are provided respectively.
