Abstract

1338251 Joint-making packing; pipe couplings AVON LIPPIATT HOBBS Ltd 25 Nov 1970 [29 Jan 1970 16 June 1970] 4337/70 and 29031/70 Headings F2B and F2G The joint between two pipes arranged end to end is sealed by applying to the inner surfaces of the pipes and across the join a cover strip g of flexible material and securing it by an adhesive composition so that the ends of the strip overlap one another. In the spigot and socket joint shown for a gas main, the joint is first packed with absorbent yarn d and lead e. After applying the grout f to the inner end of the gap the pipes are cleaned to receive a coating of adhesive for the strip g; alternatively, the strip may be impregnated or coated with adhesive. When there is a risk of movement of the pipes, as shown in Fig. 3, a reinforcement h of steel or plastics or a fabric impregnated with polypropylene may be embedded or sandwiched in the cover strip. If desired, the reinforcement may be folded or corrugated and a further reinforced cover strip applied over the first. The cover strip g may also be applied to flanged joints or bolted gland type joints.
