1335342 Measuring alignment of vehicle wheels G K N TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 16 Nov 1970 [22 Nov 1969] 57252/69 Heading G2J [Also in Division G1] A method of measuring the alignment of a vehicle rear wheel comprises positioning the front wheels of the vehicle in a straight ahead position, positioning a two-sided mirror 48 at a predetermined distance from the rear wheel and with its plane normal to the axis of a projector 24 clamped to the associated front wheel, adjusting the position of the mirror about its vertical axis to compensate for the toe-in or toe-out of the front wheel so that the mirror is normal to the vehicle axis, projecting a light beam on to the mirror from the projector 24, now clamped to the rear wheel, so that the beam is reflected back on to a graduated scale 37, and reading from the scale the amount of toe-in or toe-out of the rear wheel. The projector 24 includes a light source (25), a pair of plano-convex collimating lenses (31) and a convex lens (33) for focusing an image plate. The mirror 48 is mounted on an upright shaft 45 and can be pivoted by rotation of a knob 41, the knob 41 and shaft 45 being coupled by a shaft 42, cog 43 and toothed segment 44. A scale 49 secured to the knob 41 indicates the position of the mirror 48. To enable the mirror to be placed at a predetermined distance from the rear wheel, a tape 50 of predetermined length is attached to its base 39.
