Abstract

1334516 Grinding crank-shafts PRINCE MACHINES Ltd 19 April 1971 [15 Jan 1970] 1995/70 Heading B3D A crank-shaft grinding machine comprises a headstock 11 and tailstock for setting up the crank-shaft for rotation about a generally horizontal axis, a grinding wheel 13 rotatable about an axis parallel to the set-up axis and supported by a beam or trunnion 12 for swinging movement towards and away from the workpiece, and a finger 16 for engaging the crankshaft and movable relative to the working surface of the grinding wheel so that it trails the grinding wheel in each of its directions of axial movement. A carrier 14 is mounted to swing about the axis of the grinding wheel and carries the finger 16, which is a sizing finger, and a control finger 15, each finger having a body 15a, 16a carried by a rack, and a rubbing pad 15b, 16b having a hard facing 25c, 16c, such as carbide. The body 16a of finger 16 is mounted for pivotal movement about an axis XX perpendicular to the facing 16c so that upon traversing movement of the grinding wheel in either direction, the finger trails the grinding wheel and thus always engages the surface just ground. In another embodiment, the finger is mounted for movement laterally along a slide, and means may be provided for moving the finger.
