Abstract
1331051 Wrapping articles AYERS & GRIMSHAW Ltd and C F HARTNOLL 25 Sept 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 47806/69 Heading B8C [Also in Division B4] A mechanism for cutting a series of pieces of predetermined length from a web 53 of paper, foil or plastics, &c. comprises a rotatable drum 1 having arcuate sections S 1 -S 5 , each section having passages 13-15 connecting the drum periphery to a valve seat 23 rotatable with the drum 1, the valve seat 23 co-operating with a stationary valve member 30 having a suction orifice 34 and a pressure inlet 35 for cyclical connection with the passages 13-15 and the web 53 being held on the drum 1 by suction in the region of a fixed shear blade 45. Shear blades 6 are provided between each section S 1 -S 5 for co-operation with the blade 45 as the drum 1 rotates on a shaft 4 to produce a series of sheets each of length equal to the arcuate spacing of the blades 6. The passages 13-15 of each section S 1 -S 5 lead into respective arcuate channels 18 formed in the drum end wall 3 and closed by covers 19, passages 26 leading from the channels 18 into communication with further passages 27 formed in the valve seat 23, e.g. a nylon ring screwed to a boss 24 of the drum end wall 3. The passages 27 relating to each section S 1 -S 5 open to face the valve member 30, urged against the ring 23 by springs 31, and adjustable in angular position through mounting slots 29. As each section S 1 -S 5 passes through the upper region of rotation, the passage 27 connects with the orifice 34, suction from a pipe connection 37 holding the web against the drum as it is cut by engagement of the respective blade 6 with the fixed blade 45, the passage 27 subsequently overlapping the pressure inlet 35 whereby the cut sheet is released from the drum by atmospheric or raised pressure. Apertures 7 formed in the drum section surfaces enable a packet holder (not shown) to be mounted within the drum 1 for pushing individual packets horizontally through the apertures to pick up a cut sheet for wrapping prior to engagement with an aligned receiving pocket. Rollers 54-58 may be provided for feeding, guiding and treating the web 53, and further rollers (52), Fig. 3 (not shown), may provide additional support for the drum 1.
