Abstract
1328619 Spermicidal compositions COUNCIL OF SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH 5 May 1972 20975/72 Heading C3F [Also in Division A5] A cast film of a carboxyalkyl cellulose or water-soluble salt thereof, hydroxymethyl or hydroxymethyl cellulose incorporating, e.g. 40-60% of urea, saponin, 8-hydroxyquinolin or a quinine salt as a spermicide, may be used as a contraceptive. Other agents incorporated may be bactericidal, bacteriostatic or antifungal (acriflavine, cycloheximide, griseofulvin, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide), binding (locust bean gum, gum guar, gelatine), fixative or stabilizing (urea, boric acid, borax, ammonium acetate, trisodium phosphate), froth-prevention (octyl alcohol) or embrittlement-prevention agents (glycerine, liquid soap). Cycloheximide may also be incorporated. The film is made by mixing the ingredients with water to form an emulsion which is poured into a tray to dry, e.g. at 60‹ C. The film is then coated with talc and cut into patches.
