Abstract

1326686 Electric discharge lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 May 1971 [25 May 1970] 16307/71 Heading H1D [Also in Division C4] A discharge lamp has a luminescent screen containing a first luminescent material whose emission maximum is in the green region of the spectrum and a second luminescent material having a maximum in the region 380 to 450 n.m. The weight ratio of the second material to the first is between 1 : 3 and 9 : 1 and the second material includes as activator bivalent europium. The first material may be manganese activated zinc silicate and/or manganese activated magnesium gallate in which part of the gallium may be replaced by aluminium. The second material may have a composition x AO, y BaO, z MgO, P 2 O 5 : p EuO wherein A is strontium and or calcium and 1À90 # x + y + z + p # 2À05; 0 # y # 1À2; 0 # z # 1À6; y + z # 1À6; and 0À005 # p # 0À21. The second material may alternatively be defined by (Ba x Sr y Eu z O) 3 . MgO. (SiO 2 ) 2 where 0À90 # x + y + p # 1À05; 0 # y # 0À75; 0À003 # p # 0À05. The luminescent material can be coated on the inside of an envelope with an intervening reflector layer of titanium oxide. A strip of the envelope may be left uncoated to provide intense illumination.
