1324816 Measuring moisture content P LIPPKE 21 Aug 1970 [21 Aug 1969] 40371/70 Heading G1N In apparatus for measuring the moisture content of, e.g. a moving web of paper, a plurality of moisture detectors are arranged in a line perpendicular to the direction of movement of the web, Fig. 1 (not shown) and the detected value of the detectors are obtained sequentially. As shown, Fig. 2, each detector comprises a detector capacitor 8 included in an oscillatory circuit with a coil 9 energized by a generator 11 when a switch 12 is closed. When the switches 12 and 19 are closed a capacitor 15 is charged to a voltage corresponding to the moisture content of the web detected by capacitor 8. Upon opening of switches 12 and 19 a counter voltage is applied to diode 16 from terminal 18, and at the same time a contact arm 22 connects a contact 20 connected to the capacitor 15, so that the voltage stored by capacitor 15 is applied, as shown, to a recorder 56 which shows the value detected by each detector, and a recorder 7 which shows the mean value. The detectors are acted upon in this way in sequence, controlled by a stepping motor 23. The device 21 may be replaced by a shift register, and the recorders 6, 7 by a numerical printer. Control of the moisture content may be effected by dryers, or box slices in the case of paper manufacture. Suction may be applied at the areas of the capacitors 8, Fig. 3 (not shown).
